Artists Condemn Gangrape Of 14yearold Sunita Maseeh 567
Description: In an expression of support and solidarity, Pakistani celebrities have taken to social media to condemn the brutal gang rape and torture of Sunita Masih. The 14-year-old, who subscribes to the Christian faith, was abducted in Faisalabad for not reciting the Kalimah by a group of Muslim men. The minor was later sexually assaulted, with the rapists shaving her head for refusing to convert.  As the heinous acts of forced conversions and sexual assault on minors remain on the rise in Pakistan, several celebrities such as actors Adnan Siddiqui and Armeena Khan have taken to Twitter to condemn the same. Expressing outrage at the incident, Siddiqui questioned why people seem to be slipping further and further into moral depravity. The actor wrote, “Feeling sick to the stomach. With each new case, humanity plunges deeper and deeper into a dreary, dark pit. Why are we turning into morally depraved monsters? Abhorrent! #JusticeforSunitaMaseeh.” Feeling sick to the stomach. With each new case, humanity plunges deeper and deeper into a dreary, dark pit. Why are we turning into morally depraved monsters? Abhorrent! #JusticeForSunitaMaseeh — Adnan Siddiqui (@adnanactor) May 25, 2021 Actor Faysal Quraishi echoed the same sentiment. The Bashar Momin star tweeted in support of Masih, writing, “Appalled. Speechless. Assailants of such crimes should be granted the highest form of punishment so that they can be an example for all those who even think of committing such atrocious crimes. #SunitaMaseeh #Minorities #RapeVictims.”  Appalled. The actor tweeted, “Sunita Masih, a Christian girl from Faisalabad, aged just 14 has allegedly been gang raped. She was asked to recite the Kalma. When she refused her hair was shaved off. So, lots of activism for the innocents elsewhere, great but how about raising our voices here too? #minorities.”  Sunita Masih, a Christian girl from Faisalabad, aged just 14 has allegedly been gang raped. (@ArmeenaRK) May 24, 2021 Comedian Shafaat Ali, who removed his original post containing the victim’s picture to respect her privacy, tweeted in support of the minor as well. “Deleted my previous tweet, instead of sharing the victim’s picture. #JusticeForSunitaMaseeh,” he wrote. Activist and actor Nadia Jamil took to Twitter to speak about the attack as well. Jamil, a child sexual abuse survivor herself, shared a series of tweets speaking about children’s rights in the country. The activist requested a Twitter user posting in support of Masih to take down her picture. She later tweeted saying, “As a survivor myself I assure you, there is hope to rehabilitate and move forward for her. Her dignity must be preserved. If she wants to share her picture, it should be her choice.” Deleted my previous tweet, instead of sharing the victims picture. #JusticeForSunitaMaseeh — Shafaat Ali (@iamshafaatali) May 25, 2021 As a survivor myself I assure you, there is hope to rehabilitate & move forward 4 her. Many people took to social media to ensure that this incident does not become relegated to just another statistic. A Twitter user wrote, “What is wrong with such people? How can you expect to live peacefully when you can’t let anyone live peacefully? This is not Islam where you can convert anyone forcefully. Pehle khud to banjao Musalman phir dosro ko bhi bana lena (first become Muslims yourself, then focus on converting others) #JusticeForSunitaMaseeh.”  What is wrong with such people?? how can you expect to live peacefully when you can't let anyone to live like peacefully? (@ItsmeAqsaa) May 25, 2021 Another user commented on the prevalence of rape in our society. They wrote, “I could have retweeted but I didn’t want to show this young girl’s face by promoting it and at the same I couldn’t resist but condemning this brutal act. #JusticeForSunitaMaseeh is another example of how rape is slowly becoming a tradition in our society than a crime.” I could have Retweeted but I didn't want to show this young girl's face by promoting it and at the same I couldn't resist but condemning this brutal act. #JusticeForSunitaMaseeh is another example of how Rape is slowly becoming a tradition in our society than a crime . — Nabya Shahid (@nabyashahid) May 25, 2021 Commenting on the self-righteousness attackers feels when oppressing minority groups, a user said, “A 14-year-old Christian girl, Sunita Masih, was gang raped in Pakistan. They asked her to convert to Islam WHILE raping her and when she resisted, they shaved her head. You’re not doing God a favour by forcefully converting innocents. You’re a monster and deserve hell.” A 14-year-old Christian girl, Sunita Masih, was gang raped in Pakistan.
