Pop superstar Lady Gaga recently graced the cover of Italian Vogue in a head covering that looks strikingly similar to a hijab. The release of the cover was met by several social media users taking issue with Gaga’s use of the headscarf, due to the fact that Muslim women are discriminated against on the basis of it. However, the covering is actually a pink cocoon cape by Valentino.

“If a Muslim woman of colour wears a headscarf, she’s oppressed. But if a white woman does the same, it is fashion,” wrote a user on Twitter. Another humorously asked, “Girl, we going to Islam?”

Gaga, who is currently involved in promotions for her upcoming fashion-thriller House of Gucci can be seen with her hair covered in a pink head covering in the close-up shot, with minimal makeup and done up lashes, an ode to the 60s fashion scene. Gaga is also the face of Valentino’s Voce Viva fragrance.
The singer, who is also known for her acting, reflected on her role in the upcoming Ridley Scott film House of Gucci, in which Gaga essays the part of Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of the late Maurizio Gucci. On her commitment to the role, Gaga shared, “I only felt that I could truly do this story justice if I approached it with the eye of a curious woman who was interested in possessing a journalistic spirit so that I could read between the lines of what was happening in the film’s scenes.” She added, “Meaning that nobody was going to tell me who Patrizia Gucci was. Not even Patrizia Gucci.”
