    Govt Moves For Early Closure Of Markets Eateries To Conserve Energy 26963
    Description: The government on Tuesday announced various steps under its National Energy Conservation Plan and said provinces will be consulted for the implementation of the initiative.  Briefing the media after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif said the national energy conservation plan and the policy of austerity measures had been approved. The Cabinet had discussed the proposed austerity measures at length and hoped that they would soon become part of the national culture while also benefiting the country through the prevailing financial crisis. He said energy conservation and austerity is a national cause, and we want to launch it with consensus, adding that the government planned to finalise its policy within the next couple of days. Similarly, marriage halls will have to close by 10pm. Moreover, energy-efficient fans and bulbs would soon be introduced, while street lights will be switched on in an alternating manner. Moreover, the use of electric bikes will be encouraged and the government is negotiating with a company for their manufacturing. Asif said all these austerity measures will help save billions of rupees for the government. The defence minister said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will also run a special campaign to create awareness among the masses to educate on the utility of these measures. Read More Protest held against flood crisis mishandling The announcement comes a day after PM Shehbaz had directed concerned officials not to put any additional burden on the gas and electricity consumers in the country. The prime minister had been chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad regarding the energy sector. During the meeting, the participants had considered adoption of a comprehensive strategy to control the present circular debt in the sectors of oil and gas. The PM had said that the government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) practically completely eradicated the circular debt during its tenure of 2013-2018. The premier resolved to bring the problem of debt under control with continuous efforts and effective planning. He directed that reforms in the energy sector should be undertaken in a way that the circular debt could be eliminated.
