According to officials, both theatres had been issued multiple notices to renew their expired licences but failed to comply.
Acting on provincial government directives, the council took action to enforce cultural and administrative rules.
A spokesperson for the Punjab Council of Arts said that the closure orders were implemented “in line with government policy,” adding that the theatres would remain sealed until their licences were renewed.
Sources revealed that the council has also sent fresh directives to theatre owners across Punjab, warning them to update their licences promptly and strictly follow legal and cultural guidelines.
“The Punjab Council of Arts is committed to promoting cultural and artistic activities, but maintaining discipline and quality in theatres is equally important,” the spokesperson added.
The move is part of a broader effort by the Punjab government to ensure transparency, quality control and compliance in the province’s performing arts sector.
