Speaking on the issue at the Jinnah Conventional Hall, Khar said international treaties cannot be abandoned by one party alone and warned that unilateral actions would undermine the global rules-based order.
She said allowing any violation of the treaty would set a dangerous precedent internationally, adding that such developments would not remain limited to Pakistan but could impact the wider international system.
Referring to legal opinion from the Permanent Court of Arbitration, Khar maintained that India had no authority to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty on its own.
The former foreign minister said Pakistan had consistently sought better relations with India, but progress had been hindered due to New Delhi’s approach.
She added that international law must be upheld and no country should pursue actions that undermine established treaties.
Khar said water should not become a source of conflict between neighbouring countries but should instead be used as a means of cooperation.
