Speaking to local media, Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said the decision came after the United States targeted Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with civilian casualties in recent strikes involving Israel and the US.
“Given the current security situation in the region, it is no longer possible for Iran to take part in this global event,” he added.
Iran had qualified for the World Cup after a strong showing in the Asian qualifiers and was drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19 across the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Reports suggested that if Iran formally withdraws, FIFA may invite another team to take its place in the tournament.
